Client has lost repeater and sub-field values, though data appears to be intact

This happened relatively recently; need to ask him just when.

He had a series of repeater fields with sub-fields. This goes back at least to early last year. Now, when you look at the 4 fields, they are "text".

I noticed that he did not have the Repeater or Options add-ins installed, and not sure why. Another contractor has worked on the site, since I was helping this guy, so maybe he did not know they were needed. I re-added them.

When I look at the wp_acf_fields table, and wp_acf_values tables, it seems quite clear that the desired data is in there. The fields setup, and desired data.

Yet, when I look at the fields setup, it shows the 4 fields as "text".

If I change one of them to repeater type, and then make a sub-field, I see that the record for that sub-field is created in the wp_post_meta table, not the wp_acf_fields table. Did you change from using your own custom tables, to using WP core tables? Is this all related to this?

I could re-configure the fields, but there is a lot of data that would then no longer be hooked up. Can you help me see what's going wrong here?

Thanks!
